Excuses to Get Out of Team Building

Team building is the only workplace activity that is compulsory, unpaid at the margins, and described in the invite as optional. There is a reason the word 'mandatory fun' exists in every language that has an office in it. Somebody booked an escape room. Somebody else has decided that the way to fix a communication problem between two departments is a ropes course. The useful thing to know is that organisers are far less attached to attendance than to numbers, and numbers are usually locked a week out. Declining early is a favour: it saves a deposit. Declining on the morning is what makes you the person who ruined the group photo. The other useful thing is that a partial yes lands better than a full no. 'I'll skip the go-karting and come to the pub afterwards' concedes the actual point, which is that the team building happens in the pub and always has. Below are ten excuses to get out of team building that don't make you sound like you dislike your colleagues, plus twenty short ones in the generator. Physical constraints are the sturdiest, because nobody argues with a knee.

10 hand-picked excuses
01
I'll skip the escape room, I've done four of them and I have never once been the person who spots the clue.
02
Sitting this one out. I've got a shoulder that doesn't do trust falls and a physio who agrees with it.
03
Not joining the away afternoon, I've got the client deliverable that the away afternoon was originally moved for.
04
I'll pass on the bowling. Happy to come to the pub afterwards, which is where the team building happens anyway.
05
Can't make it, it's outside working hours and I've got childcare that ends at six.
06
Skipping the improv workshop. I've read my performance review; I don't need a second one.
07
I'll be out for the go-karting. I don't drive, and this would be a two-hour reminder of that.
08
Not able to make Thursday, it's a ninety-minute journey each way for a ninety-minute activity.
09
Sitting out the ropes course, my knees and my insurance are in agreement for once.
10
I'll skip it. I'd rather spend the afternoon actually unblocking the two people I'm currently blocking.

FAQ
What's the most credible excuse for getting out of team building?
I'll skip the escape room, I've done four of them and I have never once been the person who spots the clue. It works because it's specific, honest about the trade-off, and short enough that nobody has follow-up questions.
Can I use the same excuse twice?
Sparingly. Pattern-match is the enemy of plausibility. Rotate from the list of 30 on this page.
Should I post a written update instead?
Almost always yes. A two-sentence async update earns more trust than showing up silent on camera.
