Excuses to Skip a Work Offsite

The offsite is two days of workshops wrapped in two days of travel, held somewhere with a lake and no phone signal, and it will conclude with the same three action items as the last one. Everyone knows this. The organiser knows it too, which is why the agenda contains a session called 'Where Do We Go From Here' scheduled for the graveyard slot after lunch. The strong reasons to skip are all about proportion. A full day of flights each way for a day and a half of sessions is an argument anybody can follow. Being in one session out of five is another. So is being mid-migration with a cutover on the Thursday, which is the kind of detail that ends the discussion because nobody wants to own the alternative. The things people forget to say, and should: that you'll take the readout, and that you'll send your input as a document beforehand so the session you'd have been in still works. An absent colleague who contributed in writing is a rounding error. An absent colleague who contributed nothing is a topic. Below are ten excuses to skip a work offsite, plus twenty in the generator.

10 hand-picked excuses
01
I can't do the offsite, it's two nights away and I've nobody to leave the house with.

Sitting out the offsite, I'm on-call that week and the venue has famously poor signal.
03
Can't make it, the flights work out at a full day of travel each way for a day and a half of workshops.
04
I'll miss the offsite, I've got a hospital appointment on the Wednesday that I've been waiting for since March.
05
Not coming, my passport is somewhere in the renewal system and the offsite is abroad.
06
Skipping it. The agenda is four sessions I'm not in and one I could contribute a document to.

Can't do the offsite, I'm mid-migration and the cutover date is the Thursday.
08
I'm out for the offsite, the budget only covered nine of us and I volunteered to be the tenth.
09
Not attending, the hotel is an hour from the venue and the shuttle appears to be a rumour.
10
I'll skip it and take the readout. I've been to the version of this where we agreed the same three things.

FAQ
What's the most credible excuse for skipping a work offsite?
I can't do the offsite, it's two nights away and I've nobody to leave the house with. It works because it's specific, honest about the trade-off, and short enough that nobody has follow-up questions.
Can I use the same excuse twice?
Sparingly. Pattern-match is the enemy of plausibility. Rotate from the list of 30 on this page.
Should I post a written update instead?
Almost always yes. A two-sentence async update earns more trust than showing up silent on camera.
