How to play Career Countdown
Start with the arithmetic. Your age, your retirement age, your meetings per week, and an honest answer about your trajectory. Constant means your calendar stays exactly this bad forever, which is the optimistic option. The page multiplies it out across 46 working weeks a year and hands you a number. The number is large. It is meant to be large. It is every meeting still standing between you and the last one.
Then you bargain. Seven life choices, each with a measurable effect on the total. Decline all recurring invites and watch 45 percent of the number fall off. Switch to a four day week and buy back a fifth of your remaining calendar. Become a manager and watch the number climb 90 percent and start compounding, because you did not become a manager to attend fewer meetings, whatever you told yourself. Accept the promotion into Strategic Alignment and the number does something you will want to sit down for.
The choices interact. Managers who decline recurring invites discover they cannot decline the ones they organize, which is most of them. The farming option ignores your title entirely, because the farm does not have an org chart, only a co-op meeting and a standing appointment with the vet, both of which start on time. When you are done negotiating, lock the plan in and collect your ending. There are eight. Some are earned. One is a tombstone.
Field notes on the number
The projection is deliberately conservative. It assumes 45 minute meetings, which has not been true of any meeting since 2019, and it does not count the ten minutes of joining noises, the five minutes of screen sharing negotiations, or the recap meeting scheduled to discuss the meeting. The real number is worse. We could not print the real number. Legal had notes.

They all press it, they all go quiet for a second, and then they all press it again and go back to their plan. The button is not really about farming.
